What Is PICO Laser?
“PICO” refers to laser technology that delivers energy in extremely short pulses measured in picoseconds.
Depending on the specific device, wavelength, settings, and condition being treated, picosecond lasers can be used to target pigment.
Research involving skin of color has shown that certain laser treatments, including some picosecond devices, can improve post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation in appropriately selected patients. At the same time, laser treatments can also create or worsen pigmentation when the skin responds with inflammation.
That is why treatment selection matters so much.
Is Every Dark Spot the Same?
No—and this is probably one of the most important things I can teach you.
A dark spot left behind after acne isn't automatically the same thing as melasma.
Pigmentation from inflammation isn't necessarily approached exactly like pigmentation from another cause.
And sometimes what looks like a simple dark spot to the client needs a different type of evaluation.
Before choosing laser, I want to understand what we're actually looking at.
Why Am I So Careful With Melanin-Rich Skin?
Because being able to perform a laser treatment and knowing how to appropriately treat the skin in front of you are two different things.
Melanin-rich skin requires thoughtful treatment selection because inflammation itself can potentially trigger additional pigmentation.
My goal is never:
“How much energy can we use?”
My goal is:
“What is the safest and most appropriate way to move this client toward their goal?”
Sometimes that's PICO.
Sometimes it's skincare.
Sometimes it's a peel.
Sometimes it's a combination plan performed over time.
And sometimes we're not ready for laser yet.
How Many PICO Sessions Will I Need?
There isn't one number I can promise every person.
Treatment frequency and the number of sessions can vary depending on the concern, depth and type of pigmentation, your skin's response, homecare, sun exposure, and whether the original trigger is still present.
This is why I prefer creating a treatment plan instead of selling isolated sessions with unrealistic expectations.
What Can Affect My Results?
A lot more than what happens during the appointment.
Your results may be influenced by:
- Sun exposure
- Continued acne or inflammation
- Picking at the skin
- Homecare
- Hormonal factors
- The type of pigmentation
- Treatment consistency
- Individual skin response
Professional treatment and daily skin habits need to work together.
Tacha’s Take
PICO is one of the tools I may use for pigmentation, but the laser itself isn't what makes a treatment plan personalized.
The assessment does.
I want to understand your skin first, choose the right tool second, and make adjustments based on how your skin responds.
That approach will always matter more to me than chasing the latest treatment trend.
